Skills for Care is a charity that uses its proven expertise in workforce development to make sure those working in adult social care in England can deliver high quality care and support.  Our practical support helps leaders and managers recruit, develop and lead their staff, from entry level right through to senior leadership and management roles.

Skills for Care’s recruitment resources enable employers to attract more people, take on the right people, develop talent and skills and keep your people. 

We promote the Care Certificate national induction standards and advise how employers can refresh learning and make the most of qualifications and apprenticeships. 

For managers and leaders, we promote effective ways to develop expertise through our leadership programmes and keep informed via our membership offer.

For those who employ their own care and support staff, we provide insight into how to recruit and develop your carers and offer funding to help strengthen skills and abilities.

Skills for Care’s locality managers work across England to support employers with our products and services, helping employers to strengthen their business and make best use of our resources.

We regularly promote national and local events across the country aimed primarily at adult social care employers. Many of these are free to attend but we also provide more specialist priced seminars on a range of subject matters.

We recognise the value of care organisations working together so encourage Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated services to join a registered manager network.

For more specialist support, Skills for Care provides a priced consultancy offer to help organisations with more specialist needs or detailed advice.

The National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) enables social care employers to record information about their organisation and workforce.  

For employers using NMDS-SC, it’s possible to track training records, plan how many workers you need, compare their business to other care providers locally or nationally, access free e-learning on end of life and dementia care and be eligible for funding opportunities.

The information in the NMDS-SC helps Skills for Care to advise government of the latest statistics about adult social care so it can continue to be well supported going forward. 

Employers contributing data to the NMDS-SC are helping provide deeper insight into the sector and our workforce publications.

Skills for Care provides a number of different funding opportunities, the majority of which are aimed at adult social care employers in England.  

Our Workforce Development Fund can help employers to claim back some of the cost of adult social care qualifications and apprenticeships. 

An annual Workforce Development Innovation Fund supports new ways of working.

For people who employ their own care and support, our Individual Employer Fund covers courses and qualifications. 

For newly qualified social workers, our Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) funding can help employers to deliver this support.

Skills for Care can only fund those directly delivering care and our funding cannot be accessed by learning providers. Please note we do not advise on other funding within the sector, only the opportunities that we provide.

Skills for Care does not provide training ourselves, though we do offer leadership programmes and promote those who can help develop your workforce.

Our role is focused on the design and content of qualifications, learning materials and standards to support workforce learning and promoting other ways employers can develop the adult social care workforce.

Skills for Care’s national leadership programmes enable aspiring, new and existing managers and leaders to develop themselves further.

We also help adult social care providers choose the right workforce development to meet the needs of their business.

Skills for Care has produced a wide range of resources aimed at people choosing to employ their own care and support. In these situations, the employer is often referred to as an individual employer and their staff are known as care personal assistants.

To support individual employers understand their role better, and train and develop their PAs, we’ve developed an information hub that brings together useful information and resources from lots of different places.

Whilst Skills for Care's specialism relates to learning and development, our ‘Employing Personal Assistants Toolkit’ is a regularly updated resource that provides information and templates to support the recruitment and employment process. For those considering becoming an individual employer or wanting to see our latest recommendations this free resource is free to download.

In recent years Skills for Care has also helped to fund learning and development of individual employers and their personal assistants. Once the employer has found appropriate training to meet their needs, they can apply for funding to help this happen.

The ‘topics’ section of our website includes a mixture of guidance, frameworks, learning materials, films and advice on a number of different subject matters.  These resources can help adult social care employers to strengthen the quality of care they provide.

We list a range of topics alphabetically for ease of access including autism, dementia, end of life care, learning disability, positive behaviour support, restrictive practice, safeguarding etc.
