Recruiting for values in adult social care

Two care workers sat at a desk talking to an individual in a wheelchair.

Interviewing for values, behaviours and attitudes

For managers who want to improve staff performance, lower staff turnover and provide a positive return on investment, research suggests that taking a values based approach to recruitment and retention is a powerful approach.

Come along to one of our practical sessions to find out what values based recruitment is and learn how to interview for it.

What you will learn

You'll have the opportunity to develop and practice new interviewing techniques to ensure you recruit workers with the right values, behaviours and attitudes – and you’ll learn how to identify and assess how they align with the values of your organisation.

The training covers:

  • what is values and behaviours based recruitment?
  • questioning and probing techniques to assess a candidates values and behaviours
  • recording and assessing a values based interview
  • putting theory into practice.

We’ll share our top tips to help you assess candidate’s answers throughout the interview, and you’ll receive templates, checklists and activities to help you put what you’ve learned immediately into practice.

When you leave the session you’ll be clear about the process you need to take to implement a values and behaviours-based approach to recruitment and retention in your workplace.

What will you get from the day?

You’ll leave the course with some very practical and immediately useable interviewing skills and techniques to use when recruiting staff as well as an action plan for how to implement values based recruitment into your organisation.

Who should attend?

Adult social care providers who are responsible for interviewing candidates within their organisation.

The interviewing skills and techniques you will learn require two people to deliver in practice, so two people from an organisation must attend together. The second person attending doesn’t need to be a manager or HR specialist - they could be someone from your wider staff team.

Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission, Andrea Sutcliffe welcomes a values based approach “as a framework for good practice for staff recruitment and retention across adult social care services.”
