A guide for employers

Violence against social care staff remains a major concern and a difficult area for employers and individuals to address, with potentially very serious consequences. These range from stress and trauma for individuals, poor staff morale, high turnover, to serious injury or even death. There is also the risk of prosecution for employers if they fail to meet their responsibilities.

Produced for employers of all types and sizes, this guide is designed to provide clear, practical guidance to employers to enable them to assess and reduce risks and respond positively to any incidents of violence.

It contains examples of policies, procedures, training and approaches to dealing with incidents. They don't necessarily reflect best practice, but provide a starting point that can be built on by employers to meet their specific requirements.

The guide is complemented by a guide for individual workers (staff and volunteers). It is recommended that employers use the individuals' guide in conjunction with this one and distribute it widely to raise awareness of the subject and provide specific guidance on individual responsibilities, promoting best practice.

Skills for Care has developed this guide to update the materials published by the Department of Health in 2001. The work had been supported by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, Local Government Employers and the Health and Safety Executive.

For more information contact the Suzy Lamplugh Trust (www.suzylamplugh.org), the UK's national charity for personal safety. They offer personal safety training, consultancy and a variety of products including a guide for employers and managers and a lone working directory.

The employer guide is set out in sections, as follows:
