Training
Training has a very important role to play in raising awareness, helping workers recognise potentially violent situations and develop their skills in defusing them or, if necessary, escaping from them.
Training can also reinforce familiarity, comfort with and compliance with procedures, including practising what to do if they are involved in a violent incident and understanding the support that is available. It is not recommended that the primary focus of training should be on self defence or restraint. However, self defence and restraint training should be given where job requirements and risk assessment dictate it is appropriate. This should only be provided once the basic training outlined above has been undertaken.
Training should be refreshed periodically and training course content and delivery should be reviewed in the light of any incident or other occurrence which indicates that changes are required. The training examples reflect this approach and have proved effective over a period of time.
The Suzy Lamplugh Trust also offers personal safety training and consultancy.
