Common Induction Standards (CIS) refresh consultation
Skills for Care are refreshing the Common Induction Standards (CIS) to ensure they reflect current policy and practice.
We would like to hear your views on whether you think the Common Induction Standards cover the key areas for new workers to assure they are safe and appropriate to practice.
The Common Induction Standards (CIS) were launched in 2005 for the adult social care workforce. The standards are for people entering social care, and those changing roles or employers within social care. They are designed to be met within a 12-week period, and were developed to reflect NVQ requirements and the General Social Care Council Codes of Practice.
These standards have been extremely successful and the all the evidence from the sector shows that they are a valued resource. However as they are five years old we need to ensure that they remain current.
With the introduction of the QCF, Skills for Care are redeveloping all adult social care qualifications. Following consultation with the sector, the refreshed Common Induction Standards will ensure a joined up approach with QCF developments, as well as reflecting HSC Diploma requirements, the General Social Care Council Codes of Practice and the Common Core Principles for Self Care.
We have refreshed the standards to map alongside the core and shared units for the new diplomas to ensure there is consistency of approach for the workforce. However the core elements of the CIS are still retained. In studying these standards on entry to the sector, workers will be able to develop underpinning knowledge directly in line with the diploma which they will then study.
