Skills for Care's Department of Health funded Apprenticeship Programme
Department of Health have commissioned Skills for Care to carry out a programme of work leading to 1,100 starts in 2009/0. As a part of these activities, we are working in the English regions with employers and providers. Our activities include pilots of domiciliary care, Personal Assistants, males into care, non-care roles in care organisations and progression from Train to Gain to Apprenticeships.
Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care is a post-16 qualification. It is not restricted by age however full public funding is currently guaranteed only for the 16-18 age group. Reduced funding is available for apprentices between 19-24 although funding is generally available and covers the college fees. Funding for apprentices over the age of 25 is sometimes available and although the employer is expected to make a higher contribution.
The Apprenticeship is made up of the following components:
- A vocational element - NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
- Knowledge based element - Certificate in Health and Social Care
- Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 1 (Literacy, Numeracy)
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
- Employer-specific qualification (optional, this can for example be a Dementia Qualification)
We also call the Apprenticeship "Framework" (This refers to Framework 236: Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care)
Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care is a Level 3 framework, made up of the following components:
- A vocational element - NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care
- Knowledge based element - Certificate in Health and Social Care
- Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2 (Literacy, Numeracy)
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
- Employer-specific qualification (optional, this can for example be a Dementia Qualification)
We also call the Apprenticeship "Framework" (This refers to Framework 236: Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care). Funding and its availability is very similar to that of the Apprenticeships.
