A practical guide for employers who are implementing social care apprenticeship programmes
At the bottom of this page you will find links to useful resources.
An apprenticeship is a combination of on and off the job training and learning. They are designed by employers for employers to reflect the changing needs of the sector.
Apprenticeships are not just for young people but for all ages. They offer a cost-effective, low-risk way to grow your workforce and can help improve the recruitment and retention of staff.
88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce (source: National Apprenticeship Service)
Employers can create and manage tailored apprenticeship programmes to meet the needs of their business.
Apprenticeships can be employed full-time or part-times as long as they are contracted to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. The Skills Funding Agency has confirmed zero hour contracts will be accepted for Apprenticeships, a positive step for domiciliary care workers and those on zero hour contracts. For further visit Apprenticeships funding requirements 2011/12 (point 71 on page 16).
Because of the broad range of qualifications included in the framework, apprenticeships provide a solid foundation for career progression.
Skills for Care encourages every social care employer to invest in apprenticeships for new and existing staff of all ages, including promoting apprenticeships as a way for 16-18 year olds to demonstrate competency in personal care. Email us at apprenticeships@skillsforcare.org.uk and we can arrange for one of our team to help you find out more.
General information on the benefits of apprenticeships and the funding structure can be found on the Skills Funding Agency's site:
