Intermediate and advanced apprenticeships

Currently there are two types of social care apprenticeships available:

  • Intermediate Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care - level 2
  • Advanced Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care - level 3

The Apprenticeship framework has six components:

Apprentices can follow either health or social care specific pathways. Apprentices can further specialise by choosing one of three different pathways (generic, dementia or learning disability) through the competence part of the framework, the Diploma in Health and Social Care. This allows employers to tailor learning to the service they provide.

As well as using apprenticeships to attract new members of staff, many employers consider the framework to be a useful learning and development route for their current employees across all ages and experiences.

Skills for Care encourages every social care employer to invest in apprenticeships for new and existing staff of all ages, including promoting apprenticeships as a way for 16-18 year olds to demonstrate competency in personal care.

With current government priorities there is funding available to support apprenticeships through the National Apprenticeship Service - visit
