Social care workforce reports (2003, 2004, 2008, 2010)

The State of the Adult Social Care Workforce in England, 2010

The fourth Report of Skills for Care's Skills Research and Analysis Units

This latest edition of Skills for Care's State of the Adult Social Care Workforce is the most comprehensive yet and contains new information on the complex workforce which provides social care for adults and older people in England.

The report's main objective is to provide a statistical overview of this workforce in 2009, updating previous information and covering new developments in this fast-changing area. The focus of the main report is on the national picture.

There are two volumes of regional statistical summaries. Volume 1 contains estimates of the adult social care workforce in each region, and projections of the future workforce. Volume 2 contains breakdowns by region, where available, of the other data in the main report.

Researched and compiled by Christine Eborall, Will Fenton and Sarah Woodrow.

The State of the Adult Social Care Workforce in England, 2008

The main objective of this latest Skills for Care workforce report is to provide a statistical overview of the workforce providing adult social care in England in 2006-7, updating previous information and covering new developments in this fast-changing area.

The focus of the main report is on the national picture, and there is a separate appendix containing regional statistics available to download below.

Researched and compiled by Christine Eborall and David Griffiths.

Erratum: Readers who downloaded a copy of the report prior to 10th June, 2009 should note that it contained errors on pages 64 and 65. In the two tables showing NMDS-SC data by setting, column headings have been reversed. In both tables the base for care only homes should be 29,220 and the base for care homes with nursing should be 26,915. The version now on the website (Rev2) contains these corrections and also a clarification in paragraph 4 of the executive summary on numbers of CSCI registered establishments.

Annual report on the social care workforce 2004

This was the second annual report of the Workforce Intelligence/Skills Research Unit of Topss England/Skills for Care.

Its main objective was to update the statistical information shown in the first annual report and to draw attention to areas where data about the social care workforce was still lacking.

Because of this statistical focus, the format of the report differed from the 2003 one. It was published in two volumes: the main report containing a summary and national data, and a separate Statistical Appendix containing more detailed statistical information and regional breakdowns.

The research was undertaken as Topss England, but was published by Skills for Care, as publication coincided with the change to the new identity as part of the establishment of the new sector skills council (SSC), Skills for Care and Development.

The report provided separate data on the adults' and children's workforces where possible. However, in some areas it is very difficult to separate the two.

Correction to 2004 Annual Report made April 2006

The table in Section 4.2.1 giving estimated sector share of people employed in care-related occupations was incorrectly labelled: the first column of percentages should have read 'Private and voluntary sector' rather than 'Private sector' and the second column of percentages should have read 'Public sector' rather than 'Public and voluntary sector'. The footnote to the table should not have listed 'charities and voluntary organisations' as included under public sector employees. These errors have been corrected on the website version.

Apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused.
