Self care pilot - Sandwell PCT (NToW146)

Background

Sandwell PCT wished to review the existing training for Self-Care in the Social Care setting. The aim was to review the programme and assess whether it was suitable for delivery to community based health professionals.

Aims/Objectives

  • Deliver an awareness of self care to health professionals / clinicians within the community setting.
  • To promote self care amongst health professional, so that they can start to introduce it when treating their clients.
  • To signpost them to resources, information etc which they can share with their clients.
  • To have an understanding of community projects / voluntary organisations etc that they could access to increase their knowledge and that of their clients

These aims and objectives remained the same throughout the life of the project.

What happened?

The initial plan was to deliver this programme as a 2 day course. Due to difficulties in ensuring all participants attended both days the training plan was amended to be delivered as a one day standalone course.

The barriers to successful delivery were;

  • Inconsistent attendance over the 2 day course
  • Difficulty in consistent communication with the participants.
  • Staffing shortages which meant staff were required to attend work rather than the training course.

Outcomes

The training course was delivered to front line community based health professionals.

The course was evaluated and amended based on this evaluation.

An unplanned outcome was new contacts with community health services that had not previously been engaged with self care training.

Overall the evaluations showed that participants found the days useful and informative. The group discussions were felt to be interesting, staff reported that they had an improved understanding of the patient perspective.

Positive comments included;

  • 'I found the talk on community respiratory service very interesting and it increased my awareness of these conditions and available services'
  • The heart failure session was very detailed and useful. I will use some of the information when I am next with heart failure patients'

Negative comments included;

  • 'The social service talk was a little long and boring'
  • 'The depth of discussion for some subjects was not appropriate'

Although reducing the course to one day improved attendance it did mean that some speakers that had evaluated well on the two day course had to be removed from the course, e.g. the Fire Service.

Impact on workforce development and how you can use the learning

  • Improved understanding of the training needs around self care.
  • Production of training materials that can be used in the future.
  • Improved awareness of self care amongst health professionals.
