Background
The person-centred planning initiative has given County Durham Care the opportunity to modernise its day services and as part of these changes, this project focuses on managing the development of the learning disabilities day services.


Aims/Objectives
The aims of this project were to develop a range of job descriptions and person specifications to support the changes within the learning disabilities day service. In addition, the project aimed to persuade key stakeholders (including parents/carers, people using services and council members) that the changes to the day services were necessary.


What happened?
Job descriptions and person specifications were created for seven roles:

  • Community team manager
  • Community project worker team manager
  • Change manager for learning disabilities services
  • Day services improvement, service user coordinator
  • Community coach
  • Senior community coach
  • Project manager


In order to inform the stakeholders about the changes a DVD was created.

Development and training activities included targeted skills and knowledge-based events such as facilitation, diversity, protection of vulnerable adults (PoVA) and NVQ level 2 and 3.


Outcomes
The management of the project became integrated into everyday policies, systems and procedures and job descriptions and person specifications were made available. Social marketing to gain the support of parent/carers, staff and members was also implemented with good results.

The strengths of the project included the determination by individuals and teams to make the project a success.


Impact on workforce development and how you can use the learning
The new roles and funding became mainstream and were developed into further geographical areas of Durham via a successful change management system.
