Applications for individual employer funding close soon – don’t miss out!

Applications for the individual employer fund close at 17.00 on 28 February 2020. If you want to apply for money for training, don’t miss out and apply now!

The funding is for individuals who employ their own care and support through a personal budget from social care or health, or their own money (sometimes called a 'self-funder'). It can be used to pay for a range of training, including moving and assisting, first aid, communication, dementia awareness, diabetes awareness, risk assessments, skills for employers, and qualifications like a diploma in health and social care. Find out more on our website.

If you support individual employers, please share this leaflet or email us for printed copies.

Congratulations to our 2020 Accolades winner for the ‘Best individual who employs their own care and support’
Last week, we held our annual Accolades awards which celebrates the best of the best adult social care employers. We had three fantastic finalists, who were all worthy winners – but at the end of the night, we’re very pleased to announce that Richard’s House were crowned our 2020 winner of the ‘Best individual who employer their own care and support’ award.

Richard’s House includes a team of personal assistants (PAs) that support Richard to live independently in his own home, and is supported by his Mum, Tess. The judges were particularly impressed by the in-depth recruitment process that Tess follows to ensure that they only recruit the best people for the job, and the ongoing learning and support they offer to enable his team to support Richard in the way that he wants and chooses. Read this case study about what makes Tess a great employer.

If you’d like to apply for Accolades 2020/21, applications will open in April 2020. Keep an eye out on our Twitter account.

Call out for individual employers and PAs for new photographs
We want to get some new photographs of individual employers and personal assistants (PAs) to use in our promotional materials, such as new guides, leaflets and social media images. If you enjoy being in front of the camera and would like to help, please get in touch. We’ll come and spend a day with you, with our photographer, and take photos of your and your PAs in your everyday setting.

If you work with individual employers and PAs who might be interested, please pass on this information – or if your organisation delivers training sessions and you’d be happy for us to come and take photographs, please email us.

User led organisation funding 2020/21
Every year, Skills for Care distributes money on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care, to support user led organisations to deliver training for individual employers and personal assistants (PAs).

If you’re a user led organisation and want to apply, now’s the time to talk to the people that you support and find out what training they may want you to deliver or commission on their behalf.

Applications will open at 10.00 on Wednesday 12 February 2020 and will be announced on our website and on our Twitter account. The closing date will be 16.00 on Thursday 12 March 2020.

Updated ‘Employing personal assistants’ toolkit

We’ve updated this toolkit with the latest best practice and new case studies, to help individuals to employ their own personal assistants (PAs). It includes guidance, recommendations and case studies about recruiting PAs, managing your team and training them. You can visit the online toolkit here or email us for a free printed copy. Organisations that support individual employers can request up to 10 copies free of charge, and then it’s £5 per additional copy over that.

Personal assistants supporting people during a hospital admission: new guidance
When personal assistants (PAs) continue to support their employer during a hospital admission, this can have lots of benefits for the individual. This new guide outlines the benefits and shares learning and top tips about what works well, to help individual employers, local authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to work together to put the right processes in place to make it happen. It's free to download here.

Evaluation of the impact of the individual employer fund

In 2019, Skills for Care commissioned an independent evaluation of the Workforce Development Fund, including individual employer funding, over the previous two years. The individual employers that we spoke to praised the range of eligible training, the amount of funding available and the timescales in which they received it. They said that the funded training resulted in improved skills and knowledge of personal assistants (PAs) which led to higher quality care and support. You can read the executive summary of the evaluation report here and find out more about the funding here.
