Following on from the recent newsletter we have 4 additional research updates giving you the opportunity to take part in:

Take part in a new research project on personal assistance, gender, and sexuality
Researchers at Northumbria University are doing research on personal assistance, gender and sexuality and want to hear from young disabled adults in England who have been managing their support arrangements for over 6 months.

The study is asking how sexuality and gender shape the support young disabled adults get from personal assistants (PAs). It also asks how well PAs feel they provide this support. The aim is to improve the information that young disabled adults and PAs get about this kind of support.

What’s involved?
  • you’ll be invited for an interview (a conversation about your support experiences in relation to gender and sexuality) which will take 60 – 90 minutes
  • you’ll be asked to complete a creative reflective diary in your own time over 4 weeks and participants can say which parts they do/do not want to complete
  • all participants will receive a £20 voucher as a thank you for taking part.

If you would like to take part, you must meet the following criteria:

  • UK resident
  • be between 18 and 30 disabled adults, whatever your sexuality or gender
  • 6 month or more experience of managing your support arrangements

Employing personal assistants (PAs) during the COVID-19 pandemic: research study
Researchers at the Health and Social Care Workforce Research Unit (HSCWRU) at King’s College London would like to talk to people who employ personal assistants about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They would like to speak to around 70 PA employers from a broad and diverse range of backgrounds who employ their PAs using their own money, social care direct payments or combined social care and health budget (PHB only funded employers need not apply).

What’s involved?
  • a confidential 45-minute phone or video call where a researcher will ask about your experiences during pandemic as someone who employs PAs
  • participants will receive a £20 voucher for your time and help.

This research is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) School for Social Care Research and has been reviewed and approved by King’s College Research Ethics Committee and the Health Research Authority (HRA).

Share your experiences of receiving and using personal protective equipment (PPE)
The Department of Health and Social Care want to understand your experience of the PPE (personal protective equipment, for example, masks, gloves etc.) that you have received through your local authorities (LAs) or local resilience forums (LRFs).

They want to hear from both individual employers and personal assistants, as well as unpaid carers and local authorities and any other service that are not eligible to use the PPE Portal.

What’s involved?

The responses will help DHSC consider how they can improve communications, the ways in which PPE is supplied, the quality of PPE and to find out about any problems that need resolving.

Peer Support Apprenticeship: Demand Scoping Survey
Health Education England (HEE) are running a survey to find out the demand for a Peer Support Apprenticeship and how useful they would be. The peer support role may fit with some of the people who work within user led organisations (ULOs) and or people who regularly offer their personal lived experiences.

The apprenticeship standards have been developed with peer workers to support increased opportunities for people with lived experience to enter and progress in peer worker roles. The peer worker role is found in a range places like charities and voluntary organisations, community, social enterprise, the NHS, health, justice, housing, and private providers of specialist services. The occupation is unique in that it is only open to those who have expertise by experience.
