Assisted living technology

Assisted living technology (ALT) is used as part of a range of services that help people maintain independence and improve outcomes.  The increase in people using ALT means that employers and staff need to be more aware of what types of ALT is available and how it can be used.  Just as technology has become part of everyday life, the use of ALT has also become more acceptable and established.  By embracing this sort of technology we can empower people to own their own care and transform the way we plan and deliver services.

Developing your workforce

Our learning and development framework aims to guide and support those involved in the commissioning, design or delivery of workforce development to understand and plan how ALT can be utilised and the workforce skilled to use it. You can navigate to sections of the framework in the section below. 

A guide to assistive aids and technology

This guide is a resource for a range of people such as carers, staff, service users, managers and commissioners. It's been written to aid the use and development of ALT and assistive aids, enabling continual professional development in the sector. It was funded by the Skills for Care Workforce Development Innovation Fund, and produced by Plymouth City Council.

By assisted living technologies (ALT) we mean:

Telecare - the use of technology, including monitors and sensors, to promote independent living and support to people in need of care to live longer at home, in homely environments and in their communities. This may include returning home after a period of illness. It can include both simple and more complex systems and equipment.

Digital participation services - to educate, entertain and stimulate social interaction to enrich the lives of people in need of social support

Wellness Services - to encourage people to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle, to prevent or delay the need for support.

The collection of these services is referred to as assisted living services (ALS).  You can read more about their role in social care in the introduction of the framework.
