Why be part of NMDS-SC?

In 2004/05 very little was known about the adult social care sector and its workforce. Thanks to NMDS-SC and all the employers who enter their organisational and workforce data - we know a lot more.  Over 22,000 locations tell us about 700,000 workers which means that the Department of Health and Social Care, and social care commissioners can help the sector through better planning.

Benefits and what you need to know

The National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) can help you identify:

  • future demand in your area
  • trends or patterns in worker information such as sickness rates
  • how your turnover and vacancy rates compare with other providers locally, regionally and nationally.

By opening an account you can:

  • apply to the Workforce Development Fund for money to help you train your workforce
  • record training and qualifications of your workers - including those who've completed the Care Certificate
  • easily create and export information using reports for your managers about your workers.

We fully comply with the latest data protection laws to make sure all the information we hold is kept safe and we have worked with the Information Commissioners Office to ensure we follow best practice.

We create a unique reference number for every worker.

This is because we need to be able to distinguish between individual worker records. However, we don’t know the identity of these workers – the NMDS-SC is not designed to identify workers, but distinguish between them. Read more details about this.

If you give us permission, we can share anonymised worker data with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to populate section five of your Provider Information Return which saves you time.

You can find out more information about how this works by watching our video.

Local Solutions is a charity who employ over 800 members of staff. Over 700 of these are care support workers on the front line. They opened an NMDS-SC account in 2011 and use it to produce reports for their commissioner and help track the training and qualifications of their workforce. Read more stories from employers.
