The interpretive project: A creative educational approach to fostering medical students' reflections and advancing humanistic medicine

There are emerging links between reflection and humanistic, patient centered practice. We created the Family Centered Experience (FCE) to help students understand the experience of illness from the patient's perspective. The FCE centers on students' reflections of their conversations with their volunteer patients and families ' these conversations and reflections are at the core of small group activities. The FCE Interpretive Project provides students with a chance to reflect on their volunteer's illness experience. Students reflect on how the volunteer's experience has influenced the way they understand the unique experience of illness and its impact on individuals, families and friends. Projects have included poems, songs, collages, paintings, quilts, sculptures, books, slide presentations, and games. By carrying forward into clerkships what they have learned from their patients and in their discussions, students are better equipped to handle the challenges of the hidden curriculum and to preserve the values of humanistic medicine espoused in the FCE.

Calcedonies: critical reflection on writing plays to engage citizens in health and social policy development

Intro-I have been writing plays for 15 years so that reflection of the heart as well as the mind can be part of equitable and fair health and social policy development. In this paper, I critically reflect on my new play Calcedonies, including the writing of the script and why I had to write it. I include the first section of Calcedonies for the reader to have a sense of the play's construction, characters, and the issues that will be personalized and unpacked over the course of the play. In the decade it took me to have the courage to begin writing this play, I realize that my reflection was as much about how I let the woman down who asked me to write a play about her, as it was about how our health and social support systems let her down.

A degree of success: Messages from the new social work degree in England for nurse education

In September 2008 the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved plans to change pre-registration nursing education in England to an all-graduate qualification in 2015. In 2001 the Department of Health announced a similar decision for social work qualifying education and the first graduate-only qualifying programmes began in 2003-2004. This article presents findings from a national in-depth evaluation of the social work degree in England and describes ways in which efforts have been made to improve the quality of social workers, raise the status of the profession and link practice and theory as part of the transformation to a degree level qualification. Messages for nurse educators are drawn in the light of the professions? commonalities.
