Skills for Care prepares for Social Care Day of Remembrance and Reflection in March
Skills for Care is in the last stages of planning for the first Social Care Day of Remembrance and Reflection due to be held on 17 March 2022.
The day has been organised by Skills for Care in collaboration with 20 other partners across the social care sector and is being held to pay tribute to the work of the dedicated social care workforce throughout the pandemic.
The day is also a time to remember those social care workers who we sadly lost to COVID-19. Sadly, an estimated 922 social care workers in England tragically lost their lives between March 2020 and May 2021.
Social Care Day of Remembrance and Reflection will be a day when we can say a simple thank you to all those social care workers who provided care and support during these tough times, for us all to reflect on what everybody working together has achieved, and to pay tribute to those we have sadly lost.
We have launched a Memorial Wall and Tribute Wall which are being hosted on the Care Workers’ Charity website, where we are gathering people's stories and tributes that show the commitment and sacrifices our social care workforce has made.
We intend to host a physical and virtual event on the day attended by the Minister of Health and Social Care Gillian Keegan. Plans for the event are underway and we aim to include tributes and thank you messages to our social care workers, and a poem dedicated to the social care workforce. We are also hoping to create an artistic memorial tribute as part of the day.
To make all this possible, we need to raise funds that can maximise the opportunity and create a memorial that has a lasting legacy.
Our fundraising ambition has three tiers of funding targets. At the highest level we will be able to create a physical memorial tribute to our workforce. Smaller donations will also help us to manage our online memorial website and support local tributes.
We are encouraging organisations and individuals across the social care sector to support us with fundraising where possible.

On the day itself we’re encouraging as many people as possible to get involved with suggested activities including a minute’s silence, a coffee morning, or a memorial garden, to mark the day and pay tribute to the people working across social care.
Local areas are already getting involved through poster campaigns and flower tributes. The Warwickshire Registered Manager Networks, supported by Coventry and Warwickshire councils are running a poster campaign creating posters of their county flower honeysuckle, while another local community are displaying white tulips in their windows. These are just a few examples of how different areas are getting involved.
