Adult social care workforce information
The National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC) is an online data collection service about the adult social care workforce in England. It’s the leading source of workforce information for the whole adult social care sector.
Social care employers open accounts and enter worker information into NMDS-SC. Access your account here.
The NMDS-SC has been in place for 12 years and the system needs updating. As the data it produces is highly valued, the Department of Health and Social Care has commissioned us to develop and manage the new service and provide expert analysis on the adult social care workforce. The NMDS-SC is being replaced by the new Adult Social Care (ASC) Workforce Data Set service.
At 17.30 on Thursday 18 July 2019 the NMDS-SC will close. All the data will then be migrated to the new service, so users will no longer have access to their NMDS-SC account and the data within it after this date.
From Monday 5 August 2019 we will start to email account holders to advise that their account is ready to be accessed on the new ASC Workforce Data Set service. Users will be able to log into the new service with their existing user name and password so there’s no action for users to take.
Please note: registration of new accounts will be available from early August, once you have created your account you'll then be able to complete your Workforce Development Fund declaration form.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, however it is necessary to allow us to perform a managed shut down of the NMDS-SC and ensure a safe and successful migration to the new service.
We look forward to welcoming you to the new and much improved ASC Workforce Data Set service.
What does the NMDS-SC tell us?
The NMDS-SC includes how many workers there are in adult social care in England, what types of jobs they do, where they’re based and what sort of service they work in, amongst many other things.
There are over 22,000 care providing locations and 700,000 worker records registered so far on NMDS-SC. Thanks to our account holders, we have a very accurate picture of what’s happening in our sector.
Visit our dedicated workforce intelligence webpage to see what the data is telling us.
Who uses it?
- Employers use NMDS-SC to record information about their workers. They can track training records, plan how many workers they need and use it to compare their business to other care providers locally or nationally.
- Local authorities use NMDS-SC to better plan and support the services in their area. Every local authority enters their data into NMDS-SC.
- Government and other strategic bodies use our anonymised workforce information to make informed decisions about the adult social care sector.
- Anyone who's interested in adult social care data such as universities, researchers, policymakers, economists and students can access publicly available reports using aggregated NMDS-SC data.
