Health and safety

Health and safety training is a legal requirement for all employers.  It’s very important you get this right so staff and people who need care and support are protected.

Health and safety training is part of the national standards for induction expected of care organisations regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Because each care organisation has different needs, the health and safety requirements may vary and there is no definitive list.

We have resources to support you. We don’t deliver training but you can search our Endorsement Framework directory for relevant courses delivered by recommended training providers.

Our Work smart, work safe guide for employers provides advice to assess and reduce risks and to respond positively to any incidents of violence. There is also a version of the guide for employees.

Our Recommendations for CQC providers guide includes a section around induction related training, including further information about health and safety training.

The section includes what generally should be covered by the training, who should deliver the training, how competence should be signed off, recommended resources and what formal qualifications could be considered.

This induction applies across social care and health and is made up of 15 standards which make new members of staff ready to practice within their specific sector.  Standard 13 focuses on health and safety.

We have materials to support you with the Care Certificate.

In domiciliary care a large proportion of staff work alone.  By providing appropriate First Aid equipment, you can help your staff and the people they care for.

Our lone worker safety guidance is strongly recommended to anybody who works alone.

Learning and development should focus on the practical skills workers need to do their job but also keeping the values they need to put them in practice.

A key part of selecting the right learning package for your organisation is finding the right learning provider.

Find our endorsed providers

Our Endorsement Framework finds and badges learning providers who can show high quality learning and development to the social care sector.

You can search for our endorsed providers in our online directory.

Funding towards the cost of qualifications may be available from our Workforce Development Fund.
