Overview

This event is being run in partnership with SW Regional NHSE dental leads and NICE colleagues who will be providing their expertise and guidance. It will cover:

  • Fundamentals of oral health - what is it and how can we achieve it for ourselves and those we care for
  • Implications of poor oral health - links between oral health and systemic disease (to include info about poor nutrition, hydration, Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (HAP), Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP), etc here)
  • Practical mouth care tips - how to care for someone else’s teeth and oral health (including toothbrushing, useful tools and products, dry mouth care, care resistant behaviours and how to manage them)
  • Mouth care at the End Of Life (EOL) - how does it differ from the above advice and how can we support people at the end of life and their loved ones?

Outcomes

The event will in short:

  • Highlight the importance of effective mouthcare in reducing wider health risks, and in supporting good hydration and nutrition, social confidence, and overall wellbeing.
  • Position mouthcare within the wider NHS prevention and health promotion agenda.
  • Provide practical training on how to deliver and promote good mouthcare.
