Overview

Adult social care is facing increasing workforce challenges. Rising demand, workforce shortages, changing population needs and growing expectations around integrated and preventative services are placing pressure on local authorities and the wider care system.

At the same time, local authorities must ensure they have the workforce capacity, capability and leadership needed to meet their statutory responsibilities and deliver high-quality care and support.

This seminar provides a structured, evidence-based approach to understanding workforce needs, anticipating future demand and developing sustainable workforce solutions that support long-term workforce sustainability.

Programme structure

Using Skills for Care's Analyse, Plan, Do, Review framework, this interactive seminar will guide you through the key stages of strategic workforce planning. The framework provides a practical approach to understanding your current workforce position, identifying future workforce needs, developing priorities for action and reviewing progress over time.

Through practical activities and discussion, you'll explore your local workforce challenges and opportunities, assess current and future workforce needs, identify priorities for action and begin developing a sustainable workforce strategy for your area.

What you will gain

By the end of the seminar, you'll be able to:

  • identify national and local data sources that can inform workforce planning decisions
  • assess your current workforce position and future workforce requirements
  • use practical planning tools to explore the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental (PESTLE) factors affecting your workforce
  • assess your organisation's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), and identify priorities for action
  • understand how to shape a sustainable workforce strategy through co-production and partnership working
  • support Care Act responsibilities and prepare for workforce-related assurance and assessment activity
  • begin developing an action plan for your organisation or local area
  • work more effectively with partners to co-produce workforce solutions.

Why strategic workforce planning matters

Strategic workforce planning helps local authorities move beyond responding to immediate workforce pressures and take a proactive approach to building a sustainable workforce for the future.
