This #GoodNewsFriday we hear about a heartwarming experience that helped a resident reconnect with her past.
At Spellman Care’s Springbank Care Home, staff organised a surprise experience for a resident after learning about her past nursing career and a family poetry collection she had helped create.
The group’s most senior nurse Philippa made the dedicated visit in her traditional nurse’s uniform and belt to sit down with the resident and read a piece from the poetry collection, which she wrote herself years prior.
The visit showed how person-led care and understanding someone's life story can help reconnect them with parts of their identity. Through shared memories and reading her own poetry, the resident reflected on experiences from her life, creating a meaningful moment for her and her family.
Her son said:
It’s hard to put into words what this meant to us. Losing so much of her through dementia has been hard for her and hard for us, so to see her involved in such a caring way in something like this, especially through her poetry which she used to love writing, was really touching and very special to us all.
The heartwarming experience is a reminder that thoughtful, personalised care can make a real difference.
