The Training Hub by Skills for Care offers a mix of eLearning and Online Learning Courses, we break down what they each mean.

When browsing training on The Training Hub by Skills for Care, you may notice two different types of digital learning: eLearning modules and Online Learning Courses (OLCs). Both are flexible, online and designed specifically for adult social care, but they serve different purposes and learning needs.

The Training Hub offers both because effective learning is not one-size-fits-all. Different topics, different learners and different workplace challenges require different approaches. The Training Hub has been created to provide high-quality, sector-led learning that’s practical, accessible and built around the realities of working in adult social care.

What is eLearning?

eLearning modules are short, focused learning experiences designed to help people build knowledge and confidence in a specific topic. Many take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, making them ideal for busy professionals who may be balancing frontline responsibilities, shift work and limited time for learning.

Shorter learning doesn’t mean less impact. Effective eLearning requires careful planning and instructional design. The modules on The Training Hub are developed around clear learning outcomes and real workforce needs. Significant thought goes into identifying exactly what learners need to know, breaking complex subjects into manageable chunks, applying adult learning principles and ensuring content is accessible and inclusive for a diverse workforce.

When designed well, eLearning can be one of the most effective ways to support busy professionals, providing targeted learning at the point it’s needed without requiring a significant time commitment.

What is an Online Learning Course (OLC)?

An Online Learning Course, or OLC, offers a more in-depth learning experience. While eLearning modules focus on a specific subject or skill, OLCs allow learners to explore a topic more comprehensively through a variety of learning methods and activities.

OLCs are designed as self-directed learning experiences that combine different formats such as eLearning content, videos, quizzes, podcasts, reflective exercises and case studies. Rather than following a single learning method, learners engage with content in different ways to deepen their understanding and encourage critical thinking.

These courses are typically designed to take between three and five hours to complete, although learners can work through them at their own pace and choose when and how they engage with the content. Flexibility is a key feature. Learners can access the course on different devices, revisit sections whenever they need to and often explore content in an order that works for them.

Importantly, OLCs are designed to focus not only on gaining knowledge but also on long-term understanding, reflection and application. The courses include real-world examples and case studies that learners can easily connect with their own experiences. Learners are encouraged to consider how they can apply new knowledge in real-world situations, helping to turn learning into action.

Choosing the right type of learning

Neither format is better than the other. They simply serve different purposes.

If someone needs a practical introduction to a topic, a knowledge refresh or a focused piece of learning that can fit into a busy day, an eLearning module may be the most suitable option. If they want to develop a deeper understanding of a subject, spend more time reflecting on practice and engage with a range of learning activities, an Online Learning Course may be the better choice.

Both formats share the same commitment to quality; they’re designed specifically for adult social care, shaped by sector expertise and focused on helping learners build the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to deliver great care. The learning is self-paced, practical and rooted in real-world situations that people working in care face every day.

Ultimately, whether learners choose a bite-sized eLearning module or a more comprehensive Online Learning Course, they can be confident they’re accessing learning designed around the realities of adult social care.
