This #GoodNewsFriday and Pride Month, we hear from care provider PossAbilities about their LGBTQ+ group.

PossAbilities host an LGBTQ+ group across the organisation which comprises of both staff and the individuals they support with the objective of providing a safe and supportive environment for all individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.

Amanda Higgs, Head of Quality and Performance at PossAbilities tells us about the overall objectives of the group, as well as some insight into what they’re up to over the coming months.

She says:

The aims and objectives of the group are to meet up and express their views, experiences, concerns and make suggestions for service improvement, to work towards creating and supporting a culture in which all at PossAbilities are able to fulfil their potential in an environment where they are valued and respected.

The group also develops and maintains relationships with other external LGBTQ+ groups and networks and informs and influences PossAbilities' approach to sexual orientation and transgender issues by contributing experience, expertise, and ideas.

We acknowledge that it's important that all people have good knowledge levels around sexuality and know of support groups that are available in the surrounding community.

Amanda told us that the group actively work on the arrangements for the organisation's float for the Manchester Pride parade which they've participated in three times. This year's theme is “Queerly Beloved” and work is already ongoing in preparation for this.

The group has helped people create friendships, and they have casual outings where they visit the GAY Village in Manchester for food and drinks.

She adds:

Some members of the group shared the following

“I Love going to the group and talking about pride”

“I feel safe when I am out as part of the group”

“I like our day trips out”

Thanks to this group we also have a young gentleman who has just been to visit the gay scene and bars of Benidorm. He's now planning his next venture of Gran Canaria with people within the group.

We have a had a young person who has joined the group which has helped them in identifying as non-binary and feel comfortable with the way they feel around people.

Members of the group also shared what they love about being part of the group. They said:

I love going to the group and talking about pride.

I feel safe when I’m out as part of the group.

I like our day trips out.

Well done to PossAbilities on creating an inclusive and enjoyable group for the people you support.
