Building confidence beyond care for new managers

We look at how new managers can build the business and HR skills they need when leading a team and service.
Many people step into management roles in adult social care because they’re excellent care professionals. They have years of experience supporting people, delivering person-centred care and understanding the realities of frontline practice. But becoming a manager often brings a new set of responsibilities that can feel very different from providing direct care.
New managers may suddenly find themselves responsible for supervising staff, managing performance, making decisions about budgets, handling difficult conversations, planning for service continuity and ensuring compliance with regulations. While they may feel confident in their care knowledge, they can be less certain about the business, leadership and people management aspects of the role. Many may feel that being a great care worker doesn’t automatically prepare them for every challenge that comes with leading a team or running a service.
The transition into management can therefore feel both exciting and daunting. Managers are often balancing competing priorities while trying to support their staff, maintain high-quality care and navigate increasing operational pressures. Without the right development opportunities, it can be difficult to build confidence in these areas and develop the skills needed to lead effectively.
Recognising this challenge, The Training Hub by Skills for Care has launched two new online learning courses designed specifically to help aspiring, new and experienced managers strengthen their management capabilities and leadership confidence.
The ‘Business skills in practice’ online learning course helps managers develop the essential knowledge needed to lead successful adult social care services. The course explores business acumen, communication, time management, governance, regulation, accountability, business continuity planning and risk management. Through practical learning and reflection, learners build confidence in making informed decisions, managing priorities and understanding the wider responsibilities that come with leadership.
For managers who are new to overseeing budgets, managing competing demands or understanding regulatory responsibilities, these skills can provide a strong foundation for effective leadership. By the end of the course, managers will feel more confident making informed decisions, managing risk and leading high-performing services.
For many managers, however, leading a service is only one part of the role. Leading people can often be the greatest challenge.
Managing performance, delivering constructive feedback, supporting staff wellbeing and creating a positive working culture all require skills that may not have been developed through frontline care experience alone. Difficult conversations, team dynamics and supporting individual staff members can be some of the most rewarding aspects of leadership, but they can also be some of the most complex.
This is where ‘HR skills for managers in practice’ online learning course can help. The course is designed to build confidence in leading and supporting people effectively. Learners explore leadership approaches and management styles, communication and feedback techniques, coaching and mentoring skills, supervision and performance support, and ways to promote staff wellbeing and supportive workplace cultures.
By combining eLearning, reflective activities and real-world adult social care scenarios, the course encourages managers to apply their learning directly within their own workplace. By the end, learners will feel more confident leading teams, supporting colleagues and contributing to positive outcomes for both staff and the people they support.
Both courses have been developed specifically for adult social care and use practical examples, case studies and scenarios that reflect the realities of the sector. They are flexible, self-paced courses that can be accessed on any device and completed in approximately three to five hours, making them accessible even for busy managers balancing multiple responsibilities.
Strong leadership is essential to delivering high-quality care. While many new managers already bring a wealth of experience, compassion and professional expertise to their role, developing business and people management skills can help them make the transition into leadership with greater confidence.
