Overview
This free online event will bring together colleagues from nursing, social work, occupational therapy and mental health to share ideas, learning and good practice in relation to cultural competence in adult social care.
The event has been developed by Skills for Care in partnership with the chairs of the following adult social care regulated professionals’ networks:
- the Social Care Nursing Advisory Council (SCNAC) network
- Combined Care Home (CH) and Infection Prevention Control (IPC) Nurses network
- the Principal Social Worker (PSW) network (Adults)
- the Principal Occupational Therapists (POT) network
- the National Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) lead network
The event is aimed at those with a leadership role in one of the above regulated professions. It may also be relevant to those not in a leadership role who have a particular interest in cultural competence.
Speakers will include:
- Odeth Richardson - Head of Occupational Therapy at the Newcastle Hospitals, and Chair of Council for the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT)
- Dr Shabnam Ahmed - Founder and Director at School of Shabs, Educator and Social Work Consultant
- Dudley Sawyerr - Health and Business Consultant at People Care Services and Chair of Skills for Care’s Race Equity Reference Group
- Soyeb Aswat - Social work lead/BIA/AMHP and Independent Social Worker/Consultant
- Walter Chikanya – Registered Nurse and Independent Consultant
Learning Outcomes
- Learn about cultural competence from the perspectives of nursing, social work, occupational therapy, mental health and lived experience
- Share learning, ideas and good practice with colleagues from across professional networks
- Identify ideas/strategies to help inform your own practice, and to take back to your organisations
