Skills for Care has launched a new suite of ‘Practical approaches toolkits’.

The practical toolkits are designed to support leaders and commissioners in adult social care to implement effective approaches and improve outcomes, providing clear, actionable insight into tackling some of the sector’s most pressing workforce challenges.

Each toolkit breaks successful models into practical building blocks covering planning, governance, digital tools, workforce development and impact measurement. They also bring together examples from organisations that are strengthening recruitment, retention, capability and care quality through approaches that can be adapted to different settings and needs.

Examples covered in the toolkits include:

  • Be Caring’s use of block-pay and delivering outcomes focused homecare in a concentrated neighbourhood.
  • Sheffcare’s centralised induction and buddy system.
  • BelleVie Care’s use of reflective practice and coaching within self‑managing teams.
  • St Monica Trust’s tailored support for younger workers and those facing additional barriers.

Tristram Gardner, Deputy CEO, Skills for Care, says:

Our Practical approaches toolkits give organisations a clear understanding of how successful workforce models have been developed and embedded. By setting out practical steps and tested methods, they offer a useful resource for anyone looking to strengthen their workforce and improve outcomes for people who draw on care and support. Together, the toolkits provide evidence‑informed learning to help organisations build capability, boost retention and enhance care quality across adult social care. We sincerely thank all the organisations who contributed by sharing their success stories.

Skills for Care is inviting organisations that have developed successful workforce models to share their experiences. Those interested can contact engagement@skillsforcare.org.uk.
