Skills for Care

Throughout April we’re #CelebratingSocialCare and we’re loving seeing you get involved. Every Friday we’re rounding up just some of the amazing celebrations you’ve been sharing with us on social media this week. Thank you to everyone who’s taken part this week.

This week we’ve seen lots of you sharing what you love most about working in social care. We’ve pulled together some of your insights.

A cheeky joke or a big event, seeing our lovely residents smiling makes all the hard work worth it.

Tarnya, Recreation and Wellbeing Lead, Lulworth House Residential Care Home

Even small things, like offering support or a kind word, can make a positive difference in someone’s day.

Amalia, Dining Assistant, Princess Christian Care Home

I love the relationships we build with residents; that trust means everything. It’s rewarding to be someone they feel safe and comfortable with.

Jibila, Deputy Manager. Meyer House Care Home

I love the reward I get. When you go in and make them laugh or sing. You can have a laugh, a bit of banter and you know you’ve left that room and they have a smile on their face.

Trish, First City Care Group

I enjoy helping people regain their independence and feel confident again at home.

Magda, First City Care Group

To make a difference to someone life and empower their independence and celebrations of their little victories.

Silvia, First City Care Group

Choosing a career in care has been truly rewarding and meaningful.

Danni, Deputy Manager, Fairmont Residential

Being a community carer is more than just a job, it’s a chance to make a real difference every single day. We support clients to live safely, comfortably and with dignity in their own homes, which is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s sharing a smile, offering reassurance, or simply being there when it matters most, the little moments mean everything to our clients and to us. We love what we do because we genuinely care. Building relationships, gaining trust, and seeing the positive impact we have on someone’s life is what makes this role so special. Our team view their role as deeply satisfying, knowing they’ve made a real difference to someone’s day and wellbeing. It’s this sense of purpose and connection that our carers truly enjoy.

Mandy Gooch, Recruitment and Marketing Officer, Nightingale Care Home

After leaving school at just 17, I began my journey into social care with little experience, but a genuine desire to help others. My first role in a residential home introduced me to the realities of care, and the power of human connection. One moment that stays with me is supporting a lady living with dementia, where communication came through music. Singing together created a connection that words couldn’t, and served as a reminder that care is about far more than tasks. It’s about understanding people. Over the years, I continued to grow, learn, and develop – gaining qualifications, building experience, and shaping the values that define Complete Care West Yorkshire today. What started as a 17-year-old stepping into her first care role has now become an award-winning, community-focused home care service, built on passion, dedication, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. And that same passion still drives everything we do today.
