As we dedicate April to #CelebratingSocialCare, we’ve been gathering good news stories from across the sector. Read our latest update.

In our latest article we share good news stories from across social care, including Easter festivities and a big birthday celebration.

Catherine House Easter fete

The car park of Catherine House Care Home was transformed into a bustling Easter fete, for residents, visitors and local stall holders.

Stalls included unique crafts, bakery treats, and other creations available to buy from the local independent stall holders.

A Punch and Judy show also drew a crowd.

The kitchen team cooked a BBQ lunch of fries, burgers and hotdogs, enjoyed outside alongside Easter cakes, tea, coffee and ice cream from the ice cream van.

Twinnies Petting Farm were also there, giving people the chance to spend time with the animals. The spring lambs were a fan favourite, but joining them was a regular visitor to Catherine House, Wilma the Donkey, alongside some chicks, and a Shetland Pony.

Later in the afternoon, Sharon Chard, the home’s Activity Coordinator, appeared as the Easter Bunny, walking between everyone and handing out Easter eggs.

Thistle Court Easter fun

Thistle Court Care Home has enjoyed an array of Easter activities.

An Easter egg hunt took place across the home, where clues guided people from one room to the next. Alongside the hunt, there were quieter activities including Easter colouring and mask making, offering different ways for people to take part.

Later in the day, the home welcomed back a visit from Bedrock Alpacas, led by Steve, who brought two alpacas, Tolly and Murphy, along with a pony named Max. Known for their calm and gentle nature, the animals moved quietly through the home, even climbing the stairs, visiting shared spaces as well as people in their own rooms, including those being cared for in bed.

A raffle was also held as part of the day, with first, second and third prizes. The first prize was a large Easter hamper put together by the home’s administrator, Tracey.

The fun continued with a visit from Rantastic Toe Tappers, who regularly come into the home to deliver music and movement sessions. Their sessions are designed to encourage gentle movement, and support social interaction with familiar songs.

A 100th birthday celebration

Franciszek Kaizik, a resident at Bernard Sunley care home, has been celebrating his milestone 100th birthday, enjoying a fun-filled party and celebrating with his family and care home friends.

Andy Cumper, the Registered Manager of the care home, said:

We wanted to give Franc a 100th birthday party that showed him just how much he means to us all at Bernard Sunley. He’s such a fantastic chap, full of interesting and inspiring stories, always smiling and a great friend to all the other residents.

Franc said:

I’ve had a marvellous birthday. The celebrations were amazing – banners, balloons, gifts, cards – and of course, a totally delicious birthday cake, it was a wonderful day. Everyone at Bernard Sunley pulled out all the stops to make it such a special day.

I have seen many things over my 100 years including The Moon Landing, the creation of computers and the internet and even sliced bread and England winning the 1966 World Cup, but the most historical event must be watching Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation on 2 June 1953 the television.
