We look at some of the support available for nursing and social work professionals from a global majority background.

October is Black History Month, and we’re celebrating the dedication, skill, and compassion of Black social care staff. We’re also signposting to the support we have available for people from ethnic minoritised backgrounds and to support social care organisation with equity and diversity.

For nursing professionals and social workers from ethnic minoritised backgrounds we have dedicated support networks, including our recently formed Global Majority Nursing Network.

Find out more about these networks below.

Global Majority Nursing Network

Our new Global Majority Nursing network for the Black and Asian nursing workforce aims to provide you with a place to share insight and experiences, embrace collaborative working, and access personal development and leadership opportunities.

It provides an opportunity to:

  • take part in breakout group discussions to network and share experiences;
  • explore opportunities to access leadership development;
  • adapt health resource for social care nursing;
  • access training on dealing with difficult situations;
  • recognise and value each other by nominating colleagues for the Chief Nursing Officer Awards;
  • attend in-person network session which will include celebrating global majority registered nurses and nursing associates.

Our next event is a Black History Month special focused on ‘Dealing with incivility.’

This session will be delivered by Bruno Daniels, Royal College of Nursing who will be exploring the principles of compassionate leadership and how developing empathic concern can transform our work environments. Through interactive discussions, and practical exercises, you’ll increase your understanding of incivility but also gain valuable tools to lead with compassion and create a more respectful and supportive workplace.

It’s taking place virtually on Tuesday 28 October 2025 at 14:30 - 15.30. If you’re interested in joining please complete the expression of interest form and email it to SocialCareNursing@skillsforcare.org.uk.

Group for Ethnic Minority Social Workers (GEMS)

Our Group for Ethnic Minority Social Workers (GEMS) network is a group for ethnically diverse newly-qualified social workers (NQSWs).

The group is a place to have open and honest conversations about the experiences of NQSWs from ethnic minoritised backgrounds.

The friendly online forum is a chance to share your journey through the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE), connect with others, explore how we can work better together, and build confidence in anti-racist practice, all in a supportive and reflective space.

The sessions run online from 10:00 – 12:00 with the next sessions set to take place on Tuesday 18 November and Tuesday 10 March. You can book your place online.
