We’re delighted to announce that our Moving Up programme is now open for 2021/22.

The programme is aimed at leaders with Black, Asian, and other diverse backgrounds who want to take the next step in their career.

Our Moving Up programme has been running for over 11 years and has had a significant impact on the people who’ve participated and their careers.

The purpose of this programme is to support people with a diverse background, who may face more obstacles within their career, to progress within leadership roles.

It’s vital that we have diverse representation within the social care workforce, including at the top level, and this is key to the work Skills for Care has been doing for many years and within our recently released three-year strategy.

While supporting equality and diversity has been a key focus of our work for over a decade, recent events have brought more public and media attention to the specific challenges which people with a diverse background can face, and the importance of providing support to combat this.

More than ever before, it’s important to offer opportunities and support to those with diverse backgrounds who wish to fulfil their career goals, and that’s what Moving Up aims to do.

What does Moving Up involve?

The Moving Up programme includes a mix of self-learning modules and live online sessions.

It provides a great opportunity to network with like-minded people in the sector, learn from others, and share your experiences and ideas.

The programme content covers topics and skills including networking, building self-confidence, leadership skills, creating a personal brand, and identifying your own skills and weaknesses.

What’s new for 2021?

We’ve made some changes and developments to the programme this year, including decreasing the price to make it more accessible. This year employers can also claim back £500 through the Workforce Development Fund (WDF) to support the cost of employees’ participation.

We’ve changed the format of the programme this year to use blended learning, meaning a mix of self-learning modules and live online sessions. We hope this will provide greater flexibility and allow us to reach more people. We’re also working with the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) this year to recruit participants and reach a wider audience.

What are people saying?

We’re thrilled to see some of our past participants and diversity leaders in the sector sharing positive stories about the programme:

One of the best leadership and training programmes I’ve done in my career. We had a safe and supportive space for real conversations and personal development through this leadership and management programme. The support and delivery by the facilitators and programme lead were second to none.

Vhenekayi Nyambayo, Moving Up participant 2019/20

The Moving Up programme provides essential leadership development to support workers from diverse ethnic backgrounds move into senior leadership roles and I personally know staff who have been on the programme and they speak highly of it.

Cath Roff, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) Lead Trustee - Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
